Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and Commendation toward Biliteracy

The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language. The Seal is affixed to the diploma and designated on the transcript.

The State Commendation toward Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language.

Students may apply for either the Seal or Commendation during any year in high school, but Seals and Commendations will only be awarded at graduation. Applications for the Seal and Commendation are open to all Naperville 203 high school students, including students who learn another language outside of school.

Qualifications for Seal of Biliteracy

• A composite score equivalent to “intermediate high” on the 2012 Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL)

- Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
- ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL)
- Exams aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
• Meet or exceed standards in ELA on a State assessment at the secondary level

Qualifications for State Commendation toward Biliteracy

• A composite score equivalent to “intermediate low” on the 2012 Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) - Advanced Placement (AP) Exam - ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) - Exams aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
• Meet or exceed standards in ELA on a State assessment at the secondary level
