The English Learner (EL) and Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs are housed at Naperville North High School. These programs offer a series of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to support English Learners to acquire English proficiency. The Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) program also provides native language instruction and support for English Learners whose home language is Spanish in addition to ESL classes. English Learners are placed in one of five leveled ESL classes depending on their performance on the English Language Proficiency assessment. ESL classes satisfy the Communication Arts graduation requirements. English Learners are supported in other content courses required for graduation through sheltered instruction and tutorial. The goal of both the EL and TBE programs is to provide English Learners with a rigorous pathway of instruction that leads to the development of strong communication skills in English and prepares them for college and career.
