In order to best prepare Illinois students for career and citizenship, they must learn to navigate and
achieve in an increasingly competitive and globalized world. The Illinois Global Scholar Certificate
responds to a growing body of research and data that suggest future careers will depend heavily upon the
ability of students to work and collaborate in multiple cultural contexts.

The Illinois Global Scholar Certificate awards merit, on the state transcript, to students who have attained
global skills and knowledge through academic coursework, globally-focused service learning, global
collaboration, and the successful completion of a capstone project. The state requirements to receive the
Illinois Global Scholar Certificate include (1) Globally-focused Coursework (2) Globally-focused Service
Learning (3) Global Collaboration or Dialogue (4) A Performance-based Capstone Assessment

Certificate Qualifications

1. Globally-focused Coursework. Students must complete a minimum of 8 courses that have been
identified by the school district as having a strong global focus. Though additional courses may be added
in the future, the current list of qualifying courses includes:

Please note:
● Only courses taken during high school meet state requirements.
● Each of the above courses, whether semester-long or year-long, count as one of the eight
required courses.
● A capstone course, which is required to complete the Illinois Global Scholar Performance-based
Capstone Assessment, qualifies and counts as one of the eight required courses.
● Students must complete courses in a minimum of two academic disciplines.

Globally-focused Service Learning. Students will engage in at least one sustained, globally-focused
service learning activity, program or project that has been approved by the school district and monitored
by designated District 203 staff.

Global Collaboration or Dialogue. Students will collaborate with global peers through virtual or in
person dialogue or collaborative projects approved by the school district and monitored by designated
District 203 staff.

Performance-based Capstone Assessment Task. Students must receive a score of PASS on the
Illinois Global Scholar Performance-based Assessment. This project requires students to investigate and
take action to improve a global concern. In District 203, completion of the Illinois Global Scholar
Performance-based Capstone Assessment must be completed in Humanities Capstone or STEM
Capstone.
