Thirty-Six and Then Some
a witness from your Lutheran Campus Ministry at West Virginia University
They come with questions, laptops, and doubt,
with ramen on the stove and essays due out.
They come (thirty-six, on an average week!)
not counting the ones who just stop by to eat.
We gather for worship, for study, for bread,
for someone to say “I’ll sit with you instead.”
The table gets crowded, we pull up a chair,
community forms in the grace that is shared.
These students are learning, not only their majors,
but how to be leaders, how faith becomes neighbors,
how to speak up, show up, serve, and be still,
how to carry each other up these Mountaineer hills.
We should mention: we now have a new roof.
(The old one, let’s say, had a leak, but it’s proof
that the Spirit is present through puddles and all,
and that sometimes the church answers God’s call.)
Lutheran Mountaineer bonds don’t end at graduation;
they stretch across states and across every vocation.
A campus is soil, and we are tending the seed
of people who’ll go where the world has great need.
So pray for them please, these students of Word,
whose hunger is real and whose worship is heard.
Speak of this work, and let this story be told.
Thirty-six weekly. And counting. Behold!
