The native app for iPhones and Android phones is the most robust method for employees to clock in.
It provides functionality that only a native app can.

For example:

  • GPS “breadcrumbs” can be collected throughout the employee’s shift, even if the app is in the background.
  • Push notifications can be delivered to the app, such as a reminder of an upcoming shift.
  • Synchronize their work schedule with their phone’s native calendar app
  • Submit reports and form data with photos and GPS
  • View their timecard or schedule
  • Accept shift offers
  • Request time off
  • The native app can be downloaded and installed from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

iPhone Permissions:

During first use of the Timeclock app on an iPhone, the employee will be prompted to allow certain permissions.
It is important that they allow these permissions in order for the app to provide full functionality.

Notifications: User should select Allow
This permission is for local notifications such as shift reminders.

Location Sharing: User should select Allow While Using App.
This is requesting permission to access location services in the foreground. This permission is required before background location services are permitted. If the user blocks this permission they will see the GPS Blocked banner and that will be reported with clock in/out and checkpoint submissions.

Background Location: Once Location Sharing is enabled while using the app, a secondary prompt will ask the employee if they want to enable background location sharing.
The employee should select Change to Always Allow

Motion Sensors: User should select Allow
This is requesting access to motion sensors which are used to tell if the user is moving or not. When users are not moving, background location will disengage in order to save battery. If this permission is not granted, the user will experience significantly more battery drain when using background location.

How to unblock:
If a permission setting was mistakenly blocked by the employee, they can easily adjust these permissions at any time by going to Settings > Apps > Timeclock where they can change permissions for the Timeclock app.

Android Permissions:

Precise Location Sharing: User should select Precise and tap While using the app.

Background Location: Once Precise Location Sharing is enabled while using the app, a secondary prompt will ask the employee if they want to enable background location sharing.
The employee should select Change to “Allow all the time”

This will open the app’s location permission settings where the user will need to select Allow all the time option.
If the user denies this permission, background location will not work and no breadcrumbs will be generated.

Physical Activity: User should select Allow
This is requesting access to motion sensors which are used to tell if the user is moving or not. When users are not moving, background location will disengage in order to save battery. If this permission is not granted, the user will experience significantly more battery drain when using background location.

How to unblock:
If a permission setting was mistakenly blocked by the employee during initial use, they can easily adjust these permissions at any time.
Permissions can be adjusted by long pressing on the app icon on the Home Screen and selecting App Info > Permissions > Location.
