The DEM-based cross-section extraction tool, previously available only in VO-SWMM, is now extended to the OTTHYMO engine. This enhancement allows users to define transects directly on the map and automatically extract cross-sections for OTTHYMO Route Channels. It ensures consistency across modelling engines, reduces manual input, and improves efficiency in assigning cross-sections for erosion and hydraulic analyses.

This tutorial is just to show how to use this tool.
Download the sample Here.

Step 1. Download the Sample Model and Data

For this tutorial, please download the following files:

  1. The sample OTTHYMO model
  2. The DEM file
  3. The Cross-Section shapefile

Both the* DEM file* and the cross-section shapefile are required for the Automated Transect tool.
Tip: The cross-section shapefile can also be created directly in VO using the Create Arc Layer tool.

Step 2. Add Data to Your Model

Open your OTTHYMO model in VO and add the DEM file and the Cross-Section shapefile layer to your project.

Step 3. Run Automated Transect Extraction

  1. Go to the GIS Tools tab.
  2. Click on Automate Transect.
  3. In the dialog box, select your DEM file and the Cross-Section shapefile layer.
  4. Make sure your model already contains Route Channels or Compound Channels.
  5. Click Start to begin extraction.

Step 4. Review Extracted Cross-Sections

  • For each Route Channel, one cross-section will be extracted.
  • After the process completes, the extracted cross-sections are automatically assigned to the corresponding route channels in your model.

You can review the extracted transects and make manual adjustments if necessary to refine results.
