COURSE SUMMARY
This induction course is designed to prepare workers and lifesavers to respond quickly, safely, and effectively to missing persons in shallow water environments. The course provides essential knowledge and practical skills required to execute a shallow water rescue as part of a coordinated team response.
PRE-REQUISITES
- Candidates must be age 15 years.
- Candidates must hold a proficient Bronze/SRC.
EQUIPMENT FOR ASSESSMENT
Shallow Water Rescue Kit:
- 3x Sea Marker Dye
- 1x Anchor Kit and Marker Buoy
- 1x Notepad and Pens
- 1x Air Horn
- 10x Goggles
- 10x High Visibility Caps
- 10x Orange High Visibility Rashies
- 1x Plastic Storage Box
Additional requirements (site-dependent):
- Safe shallow water training environment
- Communication devices (Radio/Signal Flags)
- First aid availability on site

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
Module 1:
- Understand common reasons for people going missing in the water
- Apply the missing person plan
- Follow Shallow Water Procedures
- Implement strategies that ensure the physical and mental welfare of team members
- Understand what causes fatigue and how to reduce it
Module 2:
- Identify the types of Search and Rescue (SAR) incidents
- Recall available Search and Rescue (SAR) resources and assets
- Log information in the record keeping document
- Determine Search areas and Patterns
- Understand what factors may influence a Search and Rescue incident
Module 3:
- Understand why an operational debrief is important
- Know when and how to conduct a debrief
- Identify the different types of debriefs
ASSESSMENT
- Practical Observation – in person team based shallow water rescue simulation

SKILLS MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
- No annual skills maintenance is required for this award.
- The shallow water rescue award will remain current as long as the pre-requisites mentioned above remain current.
WHO CAN TRAIN and ASSESS?
Members that hold the “Endorsed Delegate QLD Shallow Water Rescue Induction” endorsement are eligible to train and assess the award.
ANNUAL RE-ENDORSEMENT
Endorsed Delegates must be re-endorsed annually, using the SLSQ Club Re-endorsement – Endorsed Delegates Jotform SLSQ Club Re-endorsement Electronic Jotform – Shallow Water Rescue

New endorsed delegates are required to follow the probationary TAF process.
