Club Drone Program Process

The training course consists of an online theory component and a one-day, face-to-face practical component. The theory is designed to take approximately two hours to complete, while the practical session runs for around seven hours and is typically scheduled from 8:00 am to 4:00pm.

  1. Club applies for drone course using this Jotform: Club Drone Operation Checklist
  2. SLSQ check’s the application to ensure regional lifesaving coordinator approval.
  3. SLSQ send an email advising of the outcome or contact club for further information.
  4. Club received first drone free, on completion of first course.
  5. SLSQ works with club to create their Local Operating Procedures for the drone.
  6. Club Submits Drone Operator Course Request for course and Learning and Development Team (L&D Team) receives the JotForm.
  7. L&D Team will check the approved club list and Drone Master Spreadsheet to ensure the club is eligible.
  8. L&D Team establishes the course in aX.
  9. L&D Team reach out to relevant EATS with list of candidates to confirm the below:
  10. EATS to confirm:
    • Course dates, assigned trainer, and location.
    • Confirms the trainer/candidate ratio (refer to DAG ratio guidelines)
    • Ensures the location is approved for Drone training (refer to Master Spreadsheet)
  11. Once candidates have completed sign up to FlyFreely and uploaded ARN and Casa Qualifications, they will be enrolled into the course. (Must be completed 2 weeks prior to course).
  12. Course run and candidates assessed.
  13. Drone can be utilised by the club.

Lifeguards and Lifesavers that wish to enrol in the Drone Operator Award must meet the following:

  • Be in general, good health.
  • Hold an SLSA observer award (min).
  • Be 16 years or older at time of enrolment.
  • Have Aviation Reference Number.
  • Complete RPA Casa Course.
  • Complete eLearning modules successfully.
  • Complete theory assessment successfully.

Becoming a Drone Facilitator
Please be aware that SLSQ Education will require a copy of your CASA transcript to be saved on file. A screenshot of this transcript is acceptable.
