The Australian Government has introduced a Social Media Minimum Age (SMMA), which comes into effect from 10 December 2025. This requires social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent individuals under the age of 16 years from creating or holding accounts.
While this requirement is directed at social media providers, Surf Life Saving clubs and branches should be mindful of how social media is used within their operations, particularly when engaging with young members.
Clubs and Branches should:
- Avoid encouraging or requiring members under the age of 16 to create or use personal social media accounts for club-related activities.
- Ensure that any communication with members under 16 is conducted through appropriate and approved channels (e.g. parents/guardians, official club communication platforms).
- Be mindful of privacy obligations when collecting or sharing personal information of young members online.
- Ensure all social media use aligns with relevant SLSQ policies, including the Privacy Policy, Member Protection Policy, and any applicable Code of Conduct.
This requirement reinforces the importance of safe, appropriate and compliant online engagement with children and young people. Clubs and branches should regularly review their communication practices to ensure they remain consistent with legislative requirements and Surf Life Saving policies.
