Creating a map

Any user can create a map, but you must have an account and be logged in to save the map.

There are several ways to create a map:

From map list
From the list of available maps, click the Create a New Map button on the top right of the screen. This will load the map viewer (see Viewing and printing maps for details on how to use the map viewer) with a blank base map.

From a layer
You can select “Create a Map” on the left of the screen while browsing layers.

In the layer viewer, choose the ‘Create a Map’ button to the right of the viewer window. This will load the map viewer with the layer displayed in a map.

By copying an existing map and making modifications
It is also possible to create a map by copying an existing map and making modifications. This can be useful when making a complex map that is similar to one that has been created. To copy a map, enter the large map viewer as described in Viewing and printing maps, then choose the Map menu at the top left and click ‘Save Map’.

In the window that appears, there will be an option to ‘Save as Copy’. This will allow the map to be saved with a different name, and modifications can then be made.

Selecting a basemap for your map

The desired basemap can be applied to the newly created map as described in the ‘Changing base maps’ section of Viewing and printing maps.

Adding layers to the map

To add layers to the map, click the plus symbol at the top of the Layer list on the left of the map view. Choose Add Layers. Make sure the dropdown box under ‘View available data from’ is set to ‘My Geoserver WMS’ or ‘Local Geoserver’. This ensures that you are seeing layers from the Skeena Maps Portal.

All of the layers in the Skeena Maps Portal are listed. Layers can be sorted in alphabetical order by clicking the down arrow next to ‘Title’ and choosing either ‘Sort Ascending’ or ‘Sort Descending’.

When you have found a layer of interest, click on it to select (the layer will be highlighted in grey), then select ‘Add layers’ at the bottom of the layer list.

When you have finished selecting layers, click ‘Done’ at the bottom of the layer list. This will take you back to the layer list.

Changing layer order

Layers are drawn on the map in the order that they are listed in the layer list. This means that features from layers at the top of the list are drawn on top of features from layers lower on the list.

When you have added several layers to the map, you may want to change the order of the layers. To do this, click and hold a layer and drag it up or down in the list.

Removing layers from the map

To remove a layer from the map, select the layer so it is highlighted in grey. Then click the minus symbol at the top of the layer list.

Saving the map

To save the map, click the Map button at the top left and choose Save Map. Enter a title and description of the map and click Save.

Creating metadata for the map

See metadata guidelines for required metadata.
