As a member of the global community, we offer five languages in the World and Classical Languages Department: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Latin, and Spanish. The primary goal in the World and Classical Languages program is to help students acquire the knowledge and skills to attain a reasonable level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The working vocabulary in the modern languages allows students to discuss topics familiar to teenagers the world over; such as the family, sports, social life, school, and shopping. In Latin, students learn vocabulary through studying Ancient Roman readings. The study of any one of the languages offered helps to develop a better understanding of the English language, provides an opportunity to appreciate other cultures, and improves a students’ vocabulary. No one language is any easier than another, and they all require the same discipline and effort to succeed. Learning a second language provides the skills necessary to learn other languages more easily.

Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and Commendation toward Biliteracy. The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language. The Seal is affixed to the diploma and designated on the transcript. The State Commendation toward Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language. The Seals and Commendations will be awarded at graduation.

We recommend that students study four years of one language during his/her high school career. Students develop higher level of proficiency when they study a language for three to four years. As the students progress through the language program, they begin at the novice level and continue through the intermediate-high level of proficiency. Students who continue their study through the capstone courses are prepared to take the AP exam.

Students who successfully complete the level 1 language course in junior high (7th and 8th grades) will enroll in level 2 when they enter high school should they elect to continue to study the same language. Incoming students with prior school or overseas language experience will be tested before placement in the program. Students must pass the first semester of the language before going on to the second semester. Students should have a ā€œCā€ or better to progress to the next level, e.g., French 1 to French 2. Students with a ā€œDā€ are recommended not to go on to the next level.
