Applicability: This exception applies to Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), Glulam, and I-joist mass timber products intended for structural use that must meet the performance requirements of ANSI/APA PRG 320 (CLT), ANSI A190.1(Glulam), CSA O177 (Glulam), CSA O122 (Glulam) ASTM D5055 (I joist), or applicable building codes required for structural mass timber adhesives.
When used to meet code-mandated fire and heat resistance performance requirements for structural laminated wood products and their adhesive bonds, the use of 2,2-Bis (chloromethyl)trimethylene bis(bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphate) (CAS 38051-10-4) is considered an “essential use” of a Red List chemical.
To use this exception to obtain a Red List Approved declaration status, manufacturers must:
- Cite the relevant building code or standard with which the product must comply.
- Provide written confirmation that there are no alternative adhesive solutions that meet the high temperature performance requirements that do not also require a Red List substance.
